IKE: The World is What You Think it is…

“"It's not what you look at that matters, it's what you see."“

~ Henry David Thoreau

The Huna principle of IKE is based on the idea that our perceptions and beliefs have a powerful impact on our lives. By understanding this, we can shape our reality and transform ourselves and our communities. This philosophy encourages a proactive, mindful approach to life, where awareness and intention are key tools for personal and collective transformation.
IKE, as one of the foundational principles of Huna, has a rich history rooted in Hawaiian spirituality and wisdom. Traditionally, it underscored the importance of aligning one's thoughts with the natural laws and rhythms of the universe. Ancient Hawaiians understood that a harmonious relationship between the inner and outer world was essential for personal and communal well-being. This historical perspective can deepen our appreciation for IKE, connecting us to its timeless relevance. The principle of IKE is based on four main concepts:

  • Perception Shapes Reality: IKE posits that our personal reality is largely a subjective construct molded by our perceptions, beliefs, and thoughts. This suggests that how we interpret experiences, challenges, and interactions significantly impacts our reality. The principle underscores the idea that a positive or negative mindset can influence the outcomes of our actions and the trajectory of our lives. By changing our perceptions, we can alter our reality in meaningful ways.

  • The Constructive Role of Beliefs: Our belief systems act as filters through which we view the world. These systems can either limit or expand our possibilities. IKE encourages examining and, when necessary, reshaping these beliefs to align with the reality we wish to create. The principle touches on the concept of self-fulfilling prophecies, where our expectations and beliefs about future events can influence those events' outcomes. By adopting more empowering beliefs, we can steer our lives in more positive directions.

  • Mindfulness and Intention: IKE emphasizes the importance of living with intention, suggesting that by being mindful of our thoughts and intentions, we can directly influence our reality. This involves being present and consciously directing our focus and energy. The principle advocates for taking responsibility for our experiences. Recognizing that our thoughts and perceptions create our experience of the world empowers us to change those thoughts and, consequently, our experiences.

  • Interconnectedness and Influence: IKE also acknowledges that our perceptions and beliefs can affect not only our own lives but those around us. Our attitudes and the energy we emit influence our relationships and environments. It suggests that reality is co-created through our interactions with others and the world. By aligning our perceptions with positive, constructive intentions, we contribute to a more harmonious and desirable collective reality.

Reflective Exercise:

Instructions: Grab a journal or whatever you prefer to use to capture your thoughts. You’ll complete these before our discussion session. S
For those who prefer an electronic version, I’ve created a Google Form to capture and organize your work, which you can access using the button below.
Some prefer to have a journal where they can write their responses and keep everything in one place - and that works just as well - so please serve what feels best for you. I’ve included the questions that are a part of this exercise below.

Prompt 1: The Landscape of Memories. Reflect on a pivotal moment from your past that significantly influenced who you are today. How did your perception of this event shape its impact on your life? In hindsight, how do you view this moment now?

Prompt 2: Beliefs and Transformations. Identify a belief you held about yourself or the world when you were younger. How has this belief evolved over time, and what experiences contributed to that evolution? Consider how this changed belief has redirected your life's path.

Prompt 3: The Power of Beliefs.

  • Identify a core belief you hold about yourself that influences your daily decisions. Where did this belief come from, and how has it shaped your life's path? Reflect on its accuracy and utility.

  • Think of a belief you once held strongly but have since changed. How did changing this belief alter your behavior and experiences? What prompted the shift in your belief?

Prompt 4: Our Perceptions Become Our Realities

  • Reflect on a recent event that had a significant emotional impact on you. How did your initial perception of this event influence your feelings and reactions? If you had perceived it differently, how might your emotional response have changed?

  • Consider a challenge you're currently facing. How are your beliefs about this challenge affecting your ability to overcome it? Write about how altering your perception could potentially change the outcome.

Prompt 5: The Power of Now. Consider your current mindset and how it shapes your daily experiences. How do you feel about where you are in your life at this milestone? Reflect on the aspects you are grateful for and the areas you wish to improve or change.

Prompt 6: Living Intentionally Today. What intentions do you set for your daily life, and how do they reflect your values and goals? Are there new intentions you wish to set as you enter this new chapter of your life?

Prompt 7: Envision the Future. Imagine your ideal future, considering the insights and growth you've gained over the years. What does this future look like, and what steps can you start taking today to make it a reality?

Prompt 8: Legacy and Influence. Reflect on the influence you wish to have on those around you and the world at large. How do you want to be remembered, and what actions will you take to create this legacy?

Prompt 8: Threads of Connection. Think about the relationships and communities that have supported you thus far. How have these connections influenced your journey, and how do you wish to nurture these relationships moving forward?

Prompt 9: Co-Creating Your World. Consider the role you play in the larger tapestry of your community and the world. Moving forward, how do you intend to contribute positively to the collective reality of those around you?
