Fulfillment Wheel Exercise

“Everyone has his own specific vocation or mission in life; … everyone's task is as unique as his specific opportunity to implement it.”

~ Viktor Frankl

This exercise utilizes the ideology of the "Wheel of Fulfillment," a holistic framework designed to help individuals achieve a balanced and satisfying life by addressing various dimensions of personal well-being. According to this theory, all parts of our lives are essential and collectively provide us with a sense of balance and wholeness. For those seeking a deeper connection to purpose and meaning, the Wheel serves as an excellent opportunity to “take stock” of where you are in your life and how you might want to change things. The intention is to help you take the first steps towards crafting meaningful goals—identifying opportunities to engage more deeply with parts of your life that are currently quiet or that you’d like to enhance to better support and drive you forward.

We place “purpose and meaning” at the center, viewing it as the “root” of intention—where our longing for shifts in our lives, lifestyles, careers, and relationships originates. You can think of the eight areas that wrap around purpose as the ecosystems or sub-components of what gives you a deeper sense that your life has meaning, value, and impact.

The exercise invites you to spend some time considering each ecosystem, and you’ll be asked to:

  • Rate your overall sense of how fulfilled you feel in this aspect of your life at the present moment.

  • Consider how you might like to shift it—either to fine-tune/tweak, undertake a major reboot, or leave it as it is.

  • Share any thoughts or insights that support your choices.

I recommend setting aside an hour or two to complete the exercise so you can experience all the systems at the same time. The Google Form will allow you to save your work as you go along. Consider this the “first draft” of the next version of you. It’s an opportunity to dive into the aspects of your life and begin to understand or name how you might like them to influence your overall sense of purpose and meaning differently. Also, it’s not necessary to create a goal or try to shift all aspects of your life—the goal is to help create a greater sense of awareness of all aspects of who we are and how we may be able to leverage the various communities and ecosystems in our life to support our aspirations.

If you use a Google account, your progress on this form will be automatically saved for 30 days, so you can work across devices or take a break. If you have any issues or questions, please email me at kate@katenagel.com.
