a year to explore you…
“Happiness is the consequence of personal effort. You fight for it, strive for it, insist upon it, and sometimes even travel around the world looking for it. You have to participate relentlessly in the manifestations of your own blessings.”
~ Elizabeth Gilbert
This exercise is designed to give you a wide-open space to dream and allow those inner thoughts, passions, and aspirations to come forward. So… imagine you are gifted with a year (or two) where you are free to explore and do whatever you wish. You can go anywhere in the world, and participate in any activity that speaks to your heart - maybe you climb Mt Everest, or you earn a Michelin star, or you visit monasteries and meditate. You open a cafe in Paris or buy a vineyard in Spain. And maybe you take some time on a small island to write that story that you’ve always wanted to tell. There are no boundaries - you can wake up at the beach and watch the sunset from the highest peaks in the world.
There is no financial impact to this - in fact - all your expenses are provided for you - you’ll not be financially impacted by the time away.
The catch? There really isn’t one except maybe this… you must travel alone. You are the only concern or consideration during this journey. All of those relationships will be provided and cared for - and there will be no impact on them or you as a result of this journey. You’ll be reunited with them at the end of this journey… this first step is all about you.
Some find this exercise a bit uncomfortable because it is so wide open… and if you’re feeling a little odd about taking yourself away from your life and the possibility of finding parts of you that have been quiet these past years… it’s okay. My advice is to take some time and explore those feelings… and then, when you’re ready… begin your journey.
When you’ve finished this part of the exercise scroll down to see what’s next…
Your last days of this exploration find you at beach…
As you begin to walk along the water, you notice someone. It’s you - the version of you from a year ago - before all of this exploration.
What’s the first thing you notice about the future you, and what’s the first thing you say?
How is the future you different compared to the current you?
What have they learned and discovered?
What advice does the future you share with you?
How does this conversation inspire you?
How does this experience influence the commitments you want to make to enrich/evolve your journey?
Can you identify one or two small steps to take towards the future you?
What’s involved in taking these steps?
